Modified Madness Went Smoothly For Modified Rookie
$10,000 to win is a pretty big purse. That is why Modified racers from all across the country, including True Value Modified drivers and NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour competitors headed to Seekonk Speedway (MA) in the middle of the week to have the chance to compete for a slice of that purse while racing in the Viveiros Insurance Modified Madness 100.
Bobby Grigas III was one of those drivers who attempted to make the field. In only his rookie season, he was able to beat out some of the best veterans in the country and make the 26-car field out of the 42 cars that attempted to qualify. After qualifying in the eighth position he was able to bring home a top-five finish in one of the most highly anticipated Modified races of the season.
"It was an awesome race,” said Grigas. “I wanted to win but you can't win them all. The car was a little snug in the beginning, just too snug in the beginning of the race. We were hoping the thing was going to free up but it just never freed up and then the forward bite started to go. But other than that you know, I tried to hold my own, and I just had an awesome race."
When he headed up to Seekonk to participate in Modified Madness, Grigas was coming off a pretty good stretch of runs. 2006 might only be his rookie season in Modifieds, but he has won a True Value Modified Tour race at Waterford Speedbowl (CT), a $5,000-to-win Open Modified show at Canaan Fair Speedway (NH) and has also brought home several more respectable finishes.
"I've won at Waterford and Canaan, and that was great,” added Grigas. “But to be able to come here, put on a show like we did, and beat out a lot of these Whelen Tour guys was just awesome. It’s a great boost to my confidence as we move along with the season.”
Going into such a highly respected race can be a little daunting for a rookie. Grigas went in there with some pretty high aspirations of being able to beat out some of the best in Modifieds, and he was able to accomplish his goal.
"It was my goal all along to finish up front. I told somebody earlier that I wanted a top-five and I tried my hardest, and you know what? I lucked out with a top five."
