Bobby Grigas, III  led his first career laps in the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour this weekend at Stafford Motor Speedway (CT).  It wasn’t because of a pit gamble or deal from a teammate either.  Grigas got out front in style at Stafford and stayed there for 25 laps.  Unfortunately, the rookie driver had alternator problems that dropped him out of the race and to a finish of 23rd, but it was still a race to remember.

Grigas actually started on the pole in the 150-lap race, but didn’t take the lead until there were just over 50 laps to the finish.

“I wasn’t overdriving the car at all,” said Grigas.  “When the race started, I didn’t have the fastest car, although it stayed in the top five all night long.  The car was very consistent.  It just didn’t burn up its right rear tire like everyone else did.  We never pitted for tires and we’re running really strong.  I was leading when it just starting cutting out halfway down the straightaway and then it died.

“Did I have a car that would have won the race?  Probably not because [eventual winner] Ted Christopher was on a rampage.  But it was definitely a second or third place car.  It’s disappointing that I didn’t finish the race, but we’ll work hard and get ready for Thompson this week to try and get a good finish.”

The NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour event at Thompson is scheduled for Thursday, August 16th.
