Bobby Grigas, III Looks For Big Things at New Hampshire
Racing at the Magic Mile is an Impressive Step for Young Massachusetts Driver
Showing up for his first event at New Hampshire International Speedway is going to be a big step in Bobby Grigas, III’s racing career. Actually, everything about this weekend at the track in Loudon, New Hampshire is going to be big for Grigas.
The track is the longest on the Tour schedule and the crowds are the biggest. The excitement level for the young driver is high as well.
“As a kid, I would watch racing there and I never actually thought that I’d get to drive there,” said Grigas. “I didn’t know that I’d get to this level of racing. I still want to go further, but to start out racing at Seekonk Speedway and to make it to Loudon someday is big. I’m psyched to race there and I can’t wait.”
Grigas tested at NHIS recently and he found that the track actually exceeded his expectation.
“It’s even better than I thought it would be,” said Grigas of his first impressions. “I like tracks where you can drive it in there hard. This is a track where as far as you want to drive it is as far as you can go. As brave as you are, is as fast as you will go there. I like tracks like that.”
Grigas most recently raced at another quick track on the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour schedule, Thompson International Speedway. With lightning quick speeds and long straightaways, both tracks invite comparisons to each other. However even though the qualifying speeds at NHIS are approximately 10 miles per hour quicker (and would be even greater without the mandate of restrictor plates) than Thompson, the faster track is actually easier to drive in Grigas’ eyes.
“Loudon doesn’t really feel fast,” said Grigas. “The straightaways are long, but the track has so much room that it doesn’t feel like you are going as fast. It’s very wide and even the corners are really wide. Thompson is a little bit trickier to drive because of the sharp corners. At New Hampshire, you have sweeping corners and that makes it easier. But I guess it really comes down to a driver’s preference.”
Now Grigas is hoping that his test session will translate into a strong run this week at NHIS.
“I have a few laps there now and I learned a few things about driving the track. Do I know a lot about drafting? No. But I’ll learn. That is what practice is for.”
Grigas will be racing in the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour event on Saturday, June 30th at New Hampshire International Speedway.
